Banihal A head constable of paramilitary Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) was killed and Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) injured in firing incident at Banihal on Srinagar-Jammu national highway Wednesday evening. Some media reports from Delhi said it was a militant attack on an SSB camp and put the death toll at two.
Police said it was investigating whether the death was result of militant firing or a fratricide incident.
SSP Ramban Mohan Singh said that two men of SSB were out for patrolling at Banihal and sustained bullet injuries. He said one of the injured SSB man died and another was shifted to hospital for treatment.
SSB is deployed in the area for protection of a construction company involved in setting up of rail tunnel.
The SSB has a camp near the 8.5 km long under-construction road tunnel at Nowgam, which is part of four lining of the Jammu-Srinagar national highway project. The work on the tunnel is being executed by Navayuga Engineering Company.
The SSP said when asked whether it was a militant attack said they are investigating the incident. “We are in the process of investigation and we can say whether it is a militant attack or something else,” the SSP said.
Top police officials have rushed to the spot to know the exact details about the incident. Since the injured jawan has not got bullet injury, we are doubtful whether it was a militant attack, sources said.
If it is a militant attack, then it is the second militant on key Srinagar-Jammu national highway on Jammu stretch in last two years.
Earlier, on August 5, 2015, militants had attack a BSF convoy near Udhampur on Srinagar-Jammu national highway. Two BSF men were killed and about 10 injured in the attack in which a militant was also killed.
