SRINAGAR: Commotion gripped the Parraypora quarter of Baghat on Wednesday when a youth splashed acid on a female school-teacher passing by.
The young woman suffered serious injuries on her face, and is under treatment in the hospital, while one person has been put behind bars on attempted murder charges in prompt action by the police.
The attack carried out at around 10 in the morning, sparked off panic in the area teeming with young male and female students heading for private tuitions at the numerous coaching centres located in the quarter.
The attacker was said to have bolted from the scene as anxious crowds gathered at the victims screams, but the police said that it had caught up with him after a series of raids.
It identified the arrested youth as one Riyaz Ahmad Nath of Chanpora who runs a battery repair shop in his native locality.
It was not clear why he had targeted the young woman.
The deputy inspector general (DIG) of police for central Kashmir Syed Afhad-ul-Mujtaba visited the victim in hospital, and assured her family of a swift inquiry and speedy justice, reports said.
