SRINAGAR: Daily business resumed in Pulwama town after five days on Wednesday after traders bargained for the release of 19 local youth taken into custody during curfew and bandh.
Police and paramilitary forces were pulled out, and markets and transport opened after a meeting between the local traders federations and the police early today.
The southern township was rocked by clashes amid a shutdown on Tuesday when curfew was lifted after four days.
The clampdown had come last Friday when at least 8 persons were injured in forces firing on belligerent crowds surging up over the killing of two Lashkar-e-Tayyaba militants.
In a meeting with civil society this Monday, the district administration had agreed to lift curfew the next day, and probe allegations of ransacking and beatings by the forces.
The police has said that allegations of troopers pillaging timber and joinery for roadside bonfires would be investigated, and a report given for compensation for the losses.
Today, the towns traders federations held a one-hour-long meeting with police officers, and secured the release of 19 local youth detained over the past days, mostly on charges of stone-pelting.
The traders had put the release of the youth as a pre-condition for resuming business activity.
