SrinagarGovernment Degree College Ganderbal had better off Government Degree College Bijebehara by two wickets in the first quarter final of Prof Yousuf Memorial Inter College Cricket Cup played at Islamia College ground Srinagar. The two-wicket victory makes GDC Ganderbal first team to qualify for last four stages.
Batting first, GDC Bijbehara were all-out for 166 before completing the full quota of 35 overs. Shakeel Ahmad with 29 and Arif with 26 were the substantial scorers for GDC Bijbehara. Shahid took a five-fer and Danish recorded figures of 3 for 33 for GDC Ganderbal.
The chase of 167 started on a frenetic pace thanks to GDC Ganderbal openers who amassed 121 runs for the first wicket partnership. Once the partnership was broken, spinners did do some damage but it was too late as GDC Ganderbal reached the target in the 27th over with a couple of wickets in hand.
For Ganderbal team, Fahad Ganie made a 41-ball 52 and Basit slammed a 49-ball 54. Yasin with three and Ishfaq with two wickets were successful bowlers for GDC Bijbehara.
At the start of the match the teams were introduced to the chief guest Prof. Muzafar Ahmed Khan the principal Islamia college.
The host college team will play against GDC Baramulla team today and on Friday Gandhi Memorial College will meet Islamia College Alumni in the 3rd quarter final. The tournament is being organised by the department of Physical Education Islamia College Srinagar.
