Sopore/ ShopianA Hizbul Mujahideen commander was killed in a gunfight in North Kashmir’s Sopore area , while as a militant was killed in a gunfight in South Kashmir Shopian distrct on Saturday.
The gunfight in Reban village of Apple town in North Kashmirs Sopore town claimed the life of a Hizb commander, police said.
An official said that the operation that began around 3am in the village has ended. One Hizb militant, identified as Shahid Ahmad Sheikh of Kachloo Rafiabad has been killed, he said.
Source said that Sheikh was Kupwara District Commander of the Hizb ul Mujahideen outfit.
Witnesses said that a residential house in which the militant was trapped was razed to ground by government forces during the gunfight.
Clashes erupted between protesters and government forces near the site of a gunfight.
Reports said that youth from adjacent villages of Hadipora and Chetlora tried to march towards the gunfight site to disrupt the operation.
The protesters pelted forces with stones as they marched ahead.
Reports said that a huge protest rally was taken out from the Reben village. The protesters while mourning the death of Hizb commander chanted high pitched pro-freedom and anti-India slogans.
Meanwhile a militant was killed in a gunfight at Burbugh village in Imam Sahib in South Kashmir’s Shopian district on Saturday evening.
A police officer said that two to three militants attacked an army vehicle in between barbug and Imam Sahib this evening. The fire was retaliated by the forces ensuing a gunfight.
In the intial exchange of firing, a militant has been killed.
Gunfight was underway till last reports.
A fourteen year old girl was also injured during the encounter.
Reports said that the girl Khusboo Jan D/O Fayaz Ahmad Wagay sustained a bullet wound in her right leg. Khusboo, a resident of Harmain was immediately shifted to nearby hospital where from she was referred to Srinagar Hospital for specialised treatment.
A police official while confirming the incident said that they are ascertaining how the teenage girl received the bullet.
