Srinagar24 year old Rumi Rehman, resident of Surtaing Rainawari, who was suffering from chronic liver disease, is no more. She passed away this morning after she could not bear the severe pain in her body.
According to her family, they took her to the SMHS hospital where doctors treated her for the pain and was discharged immediately. Her pain didnt subside even after we reached home. She breathed her last in her sisters lap, said Aadil Ahmad, Rumis elder brother.
There is a lot of mess as far as the healthcare system in Jammu and Kashmir is concerned. People die because they dont get proper treatment, he said.
Rumi was diagnosed with liver disease and portal hypertension, when she was 12 year old. But her condition deteriorated recently and doctors advised us that she needs a liver transplant, said Irfan Ahmad, the youngest of her four siblings.
With her death, people have started questioning the ailing healthcare system of Jammu and Kashmir as the treatment she was undergoing costed her Rs 15 to 20 lacs and the family wasnt in a condition to bear the costs. The family had appealed the general public through media for help and some philanthropists had come forward but that was not enough to meet the costs, they said.
However no help came from the government despite former Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed announcing corpus fund at SKIMS chest for such chronic patients, they said.
Pertinently, liver transplant surgeries are not performed in the State, while as its treatment also remains far from perfection. Rumi was supposed to be operated in New Delhi soon.
Irfan said that their father even begged for help to save Rumi. He is suffering from Asthma and unable to work, said Irfan who is himself working as a labourer with a mason.
His eldest brother is a carpenter but he and another brother, are suffering from severe psychiatric ailments. Irfan and one of his sisters (working at a glass factory) are working presently to run the family.
The deceased Rumi was diagnosed as a case of CTP Class C with MELD score=27, portal hypertension, Ascites and recurrent SBP. The patient was registered at government medical college, Srinagar under MRD no. Gas/Hep/17/84/MC dated 11.2.2017.
