HandwaraWidespread protests broke out across Handwara Thursday after news spread that a 21 year old student was killed in an alleged fake encounter.
Shahid Bashir Mir of Daril Payeen, Handwara, who according to his family had gone missing few days back, was killed in an alleged fake encounter in Hafruda forests of Handwara.
His killing sparked anti-India protests in Handwara with agitating people demanding registration of case against the army troops involved in the incident.
Protesters, according to eyewitnesses, torched an official vehicle besides damaging two other vehicles of deputy commissioner Kupwaras escort.
Reports said that police fired tear-smoke shells to disperse the protesters.
Reports said that a number of protesters suffered injuries during clashes with government forces.
Locals said that police used tear smoke shells and pellets to disperse the protesters. During the clashes three persons suffered pellet injuries and that includes a girl, they said.
Family sources said that Shahid was not a militant, but a Degree College student who was missing since August 21, 2017 and a missing report had also been lodged on 22 August in police station Vilgam.
Sources said he was not keeping “mentally fit” for the past one-two months.
On Tuesday, the Army had said security forces launched a cordon and search operation at Hangnikote in Haphruda forest area of Handwara, 85 kms from here, following information about presence of militants there.
An army official had said that during the searches, militants opened fire on security forces who retaliated, triggering a gun-battle.
He had said one unidentified militant was killed in the exchange of fire.
He was identified on Wednesday as Shahid Bashir Mir (21), a resident of Dariel Tarathpora Vilgam and his body was handed over to his family,” a police official said.
Police Issues NOC Posthumously
Government issued No Objection Certificate in favour of slain youth following widespread protests. It is certified that Shahid Bashir Mir of Daril Payeen was not involved in any kind of subversive/criminal activities as per the available records of this Police Station, the NOC issued by SHO Police Station Vilgam and signed by District Magistrate Kupwara reads.
Soon after the district administration assured the protesting civilians that an FIR under section 302 CrPc would be filed against army, locals offered the funeral prayers of the slain and agreed to bury him.
Reports said that administration after an hour long meeting with respectable citizens agreed to file an FIR against army under section 302 CrPc.
