SrinagarThe State Human Rights Commission on Friday asked states revenue authorities to pay compensation to the farmers whose land was taken for widening of a road from Nussu Badragund to Mirpora village of south Kashmirs Anantnag district 12 years ago.
The land (Aabi-Awal) was taken by R&B Department way back in 2005-2006 for construction of 18 feet road from between the two villages.
As the farmers were not paid any compensation as promised to them, they filed a case with the SHRC in 2012. However, as the commission remained defunct for several years due to governments failures to make the human rights body functional, the case came up for a hearing before the chairperson Justice (retd) Bilal Nazki.
While taking serious note of non-payment of compensation to the affected farmers, the chairperson had ordered personal appearance of Assistant Commissioner (Revenue) Anantnag. The officer appeared and submitted that amount estimated has been arranged and the same will be disbursed to the claimants within a period of one week.
The Commission gave four weeks time to the Assistant Commissioner for doing the needful and he has been asked to report the Commission. Besides, the Chairperson observed that the interest at the rates provided under Land Acquisition Act should also be paid to the claimants.
