Srinagar: The residents, particularly women and children, living adjacent to river banks in Zainakadal-Ali Kadal stretch fear to venture out of their homes after dusk as hoards of drug addicts take over river banks which have turned safe havens for people involved in illicit practices.
A delegation of residents told Kashmir Observer that the menace has taken alarming proportions and their repeated pleas to local authorities, including MLA concerned have fallen in deaf ears.
The residents of several affected localities like Gurgari Mohalla, Sheikh Musa Ghat, Eishan Sahib have come together under the banner of Falah Behbood Committee to fight the social evils in these areas.
The drug addicts have made our life hell. We are not able to move outside during evening hours, even our daughters are not safe, said a member of Falah Behbood Committee.
The residents said, one can find empty bottles of codeine (the most abused prescription drug) and strips of drugs used by the addicts scattered on Sheikh Musa Ghat.
Addicts descend on the area in the evening hours and no one dares to stop them for fear of being misbehaved.
We have lodged the complained to the concerned police station many a times but no action was taken said the members.
When Kashmir Observer brought the issue in the notice of Station House Officer M.R Gunj, he said, Residents have not approached police so far with any complaint in this regard. SHO, Manzoor Ahmad, however assured that he will look into the matter and ensure no illegal activity takes place in his area of jurisdiction henceforth.
