SrinagarThe Kashmir High Court Bar Association on Saturday ridiculed statement by Congress Vice president Rahul Gandhi, stating Kashmir is India and India is Kashmir and that it was Indias internal matter.
The Bar Association wants to remind Mr. Rahul Gandhi that it was as early as on November 4, 1947, when Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, wrote to Liaqat Ali Khan of Pakistan, that it is our governments policy that we have no desire to impose our will on Kashmir, but to leave the final decision to its people and that we have agreed on impartial international agency like UN to supervise the referendum in Kashmir, reads a statement by the lawyers body in response to Gandhis statement following National Conference President Farooq Abdullas urge to New Delhi to involve China or United States in the resolution of Kashmir issue.
Earlier on October 26, 1947, he in a telegram to British Prime Minister, Clement Attlee, had stated that the question of aiding Kashmir is not designed to influence the State to accede to India and that our view, which we have repeatedly made public is that the question of accession in any disputed territory or State must be decided in accordance with the wishes of the people and we adhere to this view, the lawyers body said.
Rahul Gandhi also deserves to know that there are 28 Resolutions of Security Council on Kashmir, which have been passed from January, 1948 upto June, 1998 and also several Agreements and Declarations, executed and signed by India, which guarantee the holding of plebiscite in the Jammu and Kashmir, it said.
The statement made by him is therefore, legally as well as factually untenable and merits outright rejection, it added.
Meanwhile, the lawyers body also strongly condemns the targeted killing of a 20-year-old youth, Tanveer Ahmad Wani and injuring of another youth Mohammad Ibrahim Wani at Beerwah Budgam, by the armys 53 Rashtriya Rifles.
The Bar Association also condemned the death of a minor girl in an accident, involving an Army vehicle at Agular Shopian and injuring of about 40 persons, who were protesting against the killing, by use of teargas shells and pellets, out of whom, one was directly hit in his eye and was referred to SMHS Hospital, for treatment.
