SRINAGAR: Forecasting an improvement in night and day temperatures in the plains, meteorologists here on Monday said that weather over Kashmir would remain mainly dry over the next 12 hours, barring rain or snow at a few places.
With vehicles from Srinagar crossing the Jawahar Tunnel today, authorities said that the highway would remain open only for one-way traffic for the time being, but asked Jammu-bound passengers to confirm the status of the route before travelling.
According to the regional meteorological centre in Srinagar, temperature on Sunday night inched up from sub-zero level to 3 degrees Celsius in the city and the valleys plains, even as a few hours of sun during the day also pushed mercury up.
Higher reaches like Gulmarg, however, continued in the grip of freezing weather with mercury at a low of minus 7.6 degrees.
Pahalgam was just a fraction higher with minus 7.4.
Kargil in the Ladakh region of the state was the coldest with minus 12.7 degrees minimum, followed by Leh with minus 12.
The Srinagar-Jammu which was closed on Friday and most of Saturday due to snowfall, remained open for one-way traffic on Monday, as authorities ruled out vehicular movement both ways for the time being.
The traffic department said that no vehicle would be allowed to cross the Jawahar Tunnel after midnight, and any passenger or goods-carrier arriving at Qazigund after 12 a.m. would be halted there.
Passengers, fruit traders, and transporters have been warned to contact the traffic control room for the latest status of the highway before undertaking travel from Srinagar to Jammu.
