SRINAGAR: Despite its vehement claims on conserving the Dal Lake, the state government is a silent spectator to vandalising the once-famed waterbodys last surviving fresh water source.
In what locals say is the last nail in the lakes coffin, rampant boulder extraction in the Theed nullah has added to the perils of the Dal, besides virtually destroying the pure mountain-fed stream which used to be a picturesque element in a once enchanting landscape.
With contractors and officials finding it a goldmine for extracting construction material, indiscriminate boulder mining has torn up the streams banks, leaving ugly scars that bleed into the lake.
Surging waters tear at the denuded banks, carrying large amounts of silt into a heavily choked Dal.
Locals said that they had repeatedly brought the issue to the notice of authorities concerned, but no one had moved a finger to halt the criminal act.
