SRINAGAR: With the death of a five-year-old Kulgam child due to expired noodles serving as a grim backdrop, Srinagar is defenceless against food safety offences as municipal squads have been withdrawn after raids on politically-connected outlets.
According to sources, a special task force (STF) set up by the Srinagar health officer has been rendered defunct by divesting it of market-checking powers and attaching it to the administrative department.
The step was taken after the STF penalized high-profile business establishments and destroyed products worth lakhs of rupees after finding them stale and expired, the KNS quoted sources as having said.

The health officer in the Srinagar Municipal Corporation, Dr. Rubeena, however, denied that the STF had been made defunct.
I toured Naushehra and adjoining areas with the team for market checking today, she said, adding that there was no pressure from any side.
