SRINAGAR: Rains turned to snow in Srinagar late on Thursday night, even as fresh snowfall in the valleys upper reaches and a downpour in the plains over the day deepened the chill across Kashmir.
The Srinagar-Jammu Highway was still open for traffic, but authorities asked motorists and transporters to verify its status with the police control room before travelling on the valleys lone supply line.
The Mughal Road leading to the Poonch-Rajouri belt of the Jammu region was closed once again, while vehicular traffic came to halt on the Kupwara-Karnah route due to slippery road conditions.
The road to Karnah was said to have been 1.5 feet deep under snow at the Sadhna Top where several cabs coming from Kupwara were stuck.
One of the stranded vehicles, a Sumo Taxi, plunged down a 200 foot gorge when the driver tried to proceed ahead after alighting the passengers, reports said.
The driver was said to have sustained serious injuries in the back and the legs, and had been evacuated to the sub-district hospital in Tangdhar from were he was shifted to the Bone and Joint Hospital in Srinagar.
Experiencing snow for the past three days, the ski resort of Gulmarg was the coldest in the valley last night with mercury at minus 8.2 degrees Celsius.
