Srinagar J&K State Sports Council and Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Monday faced a stiff resistance from footpath vendors in and around Polo Ground to their bid to remove them from there.
According to Kashmir Sports Watch, Polo Ground has been occupied by the footpath vendors creating lot of problem for both SMC and JK SSC in maintaining the ground.
The vendors have been using the space for more than month, turning it into a full-fledged market. So much so, there is a board erected on its gate by the vendors.
Commissioner SMC, Dr Shafqat Khan, Secretary Sports Council Waheed Ur Rehman Parra led a demolition squad Monday in their bid to remove the board and close down the market, but to no avail.
Vendors had none of it, showing resistance to fail SMC and JK SSCs attempts. They first blocked the main road and then protested in press enclave.
They are using us as their political tool. They used to back us during unrest and asked us to put beds on streets. Now as their wishes are done, they try to remove us. We are poor people who earn on daily basis. It was Divisional Commissioner who allocated us this space after we had met Chief Minister, said President of the vendors association.
We will not leave this space till final settlement is done. We want justice and they cant remove us like this. First they keep us then next day say leave this place. It is affecting our livelihood, he added
