Srinagar: Police in Pattan township of north Kashmir have detained father of a minor from last three days and has asked his family to produce the 15-year-old, accused of stone pelting during protests by students, in lieu of his fathers release.
According to the family of Aqib Ahmad Malik, who studies in 10th standard, a police party knocked at their house at Singpora near Jamia Masjid and asked for father of the minor. The police party told to us ask Aqibs father to appear before choki officer of the police post Mirgund, Shafeeqa, mother of the minor, said.
When my husband appeared before the officer at Mirgund police post, he was detained and shifted to police station Pattan where he has been kept behind lockup from last three days, she said, adding that police has told the family to produce Aqib and only then they will release his (Aqibs) father.
Aqibs aged grandfather, Ghulam Ahmad Malik said that, We have repeatedly requested police to release my son and we will take responsibility for my grandson against what he has been accused of by the police.
My grandson is a student of tenth class and if he is detained by police, his will suffer irreparable loss and wont be able to carry on with his studies. While police says that he is involved in stone pelting during protest by students recently, we will take all measures to ensure that he does not indulge in what police has accused him of, Malik said and appealed higher ups of police including DGP to intervene and release his son.
He also urged Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and Education Minister Altaf Bukhari to use their good offices to ensure release of his son.
When contacted, SHO police station Pattan said that Aqib has been found involved in stone pelting in the area and until they (family) produce him, we wont release his father.
Asked under what law father has been held, the officer dropped the call.
When contacted, Director General of Police, SP Vaid said that if family was ready to take the responsibility that Aqib wont indulge in stone pelting, then there is nothing better than it.
Ask the family to visit the office of concerned SSP, he said. (GNS)
