Kulgam: Army on Tuesday resorted to aerial firing to disperse scores of women who were protesting against the alleged thrashing of some civilians during an early morning crackdown in Okay village of Kulgam in South Kashmir.
Locals said that army launched a crackdown in the village at 6 am and asked all males, aged above 10, to assemble in a local stadium.
During the crackdown, army men thrashed few civilians, said a local resident, who chose anonymity for fear of reprisal.
As the news of alleged thrashing spread in the village, women took to streets and raised hue and cry. Army men deployed there resorted to aerial firing to disperse the protesting women, said the local. Later, the operation was called off. (CNS)
