SRINAGAR (ONS) – Flaying the unbroken curfew in the area, the Shia-Sunni Coordination Committee on Monday accused the government of not allowing it to hold its peace march in Old Srinagar.
According to reports, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, who had convened a meeting of the panel at the residence of Agha Syed Hassan in Budgam yesterday, and decided to hold the peace march, suddenly left for New Delhi later, leaving the Committee high and dry with what some have described as his non-seriousness over the proposed step.
The joint committee was set up by the Anjuman-e-Sharaie Shiayan, Agha Syed Hassan, to ensure peaceful and orderly Muharram observance, and the Mirwaiz had called the Budgam meeting in view tensions and clashes erupting in a Srinagar locality soon after Ashura.
Coming down hard on the government for deliberately worsening the situation and creating Shia-Sunni rifts by continuing curfew, a Committee spokesman said that this had foiled its plan to tour the areas to meet people directly and appeal to restore calm.
We strongly condemn the continued curfew in Old City areas which has totally curbed the movement of the people and put them to severe hardships and suffering, he said, adding that the governments measures reflected its frustration.
The peace march will be under taken as soon as curfew is lifted, he said.
