SRINAGAR: A 22-year-old youth was shot dead by Border Security Force (BSF) personnel at Batamaloo quarter of the capital Saturday evening sparking fresh bout of protests in the area.
Reliable sources said that the youth identified as Sajad Hassan sustained serious head injuries after BSF personnel from 38 Battalion opened fire upon a group of youth near Reck Chowk, Batmaloo this evening.
Police sources said that a small convoy of BSF was coming from frontier Kupwara district and they were headed to Humhama in the city outskirts.
However, sources said, they lost their way and entered interiors of Batmaloo.
Police sources said that as the youth at Reka Chowk spotted BSF vehicle, they pelted stones on it and the BSF personnel onboard opened fire.
One resident said he heard two vehicles had apparently lost track. They saw a group of youth and felt threatened and opened fire.
According to another resident, a few stones hit paramilitary BSF vehicle which was caught in a traffic jam in the locality and BSF men fired on the youth who was walking nearby.
Sajad Hussain of Chundusa Baramulla, presently residing at Sheikh Dawood colony Batmaloo was hit in the head.
He collapsed there but people present rushed him to SMHS Hospital. However doctors at the hospital pronounced him dead on arrival.
He was later buried at local Martyrs Graveyard.
A police spokesman issued a statement and said that they were investigating the matter.
Police is collecting the details and is looking into the circumstances under which a person identified as Sajad Hussain Sheikh of Chandoosa Baramulla at present S D Colony Srinagar got killed. The District Police administration Srinagar has informed that there was no deployment in the area. The matter is being investigated, it said.

As soon as the news of the death spread, youth came out protesting and shouting slogans. The situation was very tense late in the evening.
Kashmir has been tense over the past few days with several video clips purportedly showing rights abuses by the armed forces being widely circulated on social media.
Two fresh videos emerged on Saturday, showing soldiers beating up a youth and forcing others to shout anti-Pakistan slogans.
