Srinagar: Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) Monday condemned in strong words thrashing of an ambulance driver by security forces at Beerwah while he was ferrying an injured person.
Expressing deep anguish, President DAK Dr Nisar ul Hassan in a statement said that this unruly behavior from defenders of law is unacceptable.
It is ironical that medical staff who risk their lives to attend duties are thrashed.
Yesterday, an ambulance carrying an injured person was ransacked by security personnel at Beerwah and the ambulance driver was severely beaten.
This act of hooliganism against medical staff while he was discharging his duties is simply outrageous.
In the past also, there have been number of attacks on medical personnel and ambulances.
Such acts of intimidation against medical staff who provide help to sick and wounded is shocking.
These repeated assaults have become a routine and there seems to be no end to them.
This mad pattern of atrocities against medical staff has generated fear and anxiety among healthcare workers.
Medical personnel put in their blood and sweat to save lives in extremely difficult conditions and instead of appreciation get thrashing.
Such acts of disruption of medical services are costing lives.
This is wanton disregard to international humanitarian law under which medical neutrality has to be maintained in times of war and civil unrest.
As per the law all parties must refrain from attacking medical facilities, transport and personnel.
All individuals regardless of religion, race, ethnicity and political affiliation must receive care.
And it is obligatory on state to protect medical personnel and transport from attacks.
