Fuels Rumours To Sow Suspicion Among Masses
SRINAGAR (ONS) – Terming the clampdown on the Old City as painful and needless, the chairman of the Hurriyat (G) on Friday said that the government had sensationalized a minor incident and given rise to many doubts and suspicions.
India is pursuing a policy of divide-and-rule in Kashmir and trying its utmost to tear the unity and amity of Kashmiris to shreds, he said. The state government is run more by the Indian home ministry than by Omar Abdullah, and is deliberately promoting political uncertainty and instability.
If some untoward incident had occurred at some place in the lower city, then measures to maintain law and order should have been taken in that specific spot, and we allowed access to the area to resolve misunderstandings created among people, he said.
But instead, the government sensationalized the situation by sealing off half the city, which triggered off a furious rumour mill causing people to harbour misgivings about each other, he said.
Geelani made a strong appeal to the Shia and Sunni communities to show restraint and wisdom, and not allow the enemies plots to succeed.
Our nation is beset with great difficulties because of being under foreign occupation, and we cannot afford discord and disharmony, he said.
Condemning nocturnal raids and arrests in old city quarters, Geelani said that the Kashmir police was adding fuel to the fire, and its stupidity could turn the situation even worse.
The Hurriyat (G) chairman targeted the chief minister for giving Kashmir its worst dispensation.
His tenure is proving to be the worst of all governments (in the state) so far, and has outstripped everyone one in inflicting atrocities, he said.
He wants to enforce the silence of the graveyard through the barrel of the gun to please his masters in Delhi and safeguard his chair, he said.
Demanding the immediate release of arrested youth, Geelani said that the Hurriyat (G) could not remain silent on this extremely intolerable situation.
Meanwhile, the Hurriyat (G) claimed that some mischievous elements were bent upon creating chaos and disruption by spreading rumours.
Quoting a report by Hurriyat (G) leader Muhammad Shafi Lone who had toured the interior city to review the situation, the alliance claimed that these elements were directly or indirectly linked to pro-India organisations.
The Shia and Sunni communities want to live in peace and amity, but some black sheep are trying to mislead people, it said.
We are keeping a close eye on such elements, and will expose them if they do not mend their ways, it said.
