Sacrilegious Inscriptions Widely Condemned

Resistance Leaders Urge Calm, Unity

SRINAGAR – Vehemently condemning the sacrilegious activities of anti-Islam and anti-Muslim forces and expressing their concern over repeated attempts to rouse sectarian feelings, various separatist, religious, political and social organizations across Kashmir Thursday urged the people to preserve their traditional amity and brotherhood in face of all overt and covert provocations. 

Beware of black sheep: Geelani

Expressing serious concern over the blasphemous act of a foreign shoe-maker aimed at hurting the religious sentiments of Muslims across the world, Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman, Syed Ali Geelani, said Hazrat Ali (RA) belonged to the entire Muslim Ummah which would not tolerate any disrespect towards him.

“Hazrat Ali (RA) was neither a Sunni nor a Shia but under the guardianship and tutelage of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) had devoted his entire life to establish the supremacy of Islam and its socio-politico-economic order based on justice,” Geelani said, adding Hazrat Ali (RA) was a naked sword for the enemies of Islam.     

Geelani urged the Muslims as a whole rise above sectarian considerations and preserve their unity at all costs to fight those inimical to them as a cohesive and united force. He said some elements were bent upon creating misunderstanding over trivial issues between various sections of the community as an attempt to divert the people’s attention from the freedom movement.

“Had I been free to move about, I would have visited the affected downtown localities and met with the clerics and scholars representing various schools to though to forge unity in the community,” Geelani said “the intelligence agencies of United States and India are behind the sectarian turmoil in Pakistan and, through their agents, are trying to incite sectarian violence in Jammu and Kashmir as well.”

He cautioned the people against wittingly or unwittingly walking into the traps laid by the inimical forces and black sheep among their ranks to foil their nefarious designs.  

Agencies creating tension: Mirwaiz

Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, called upon people, especially youth, to maintain unity and mutual brotherhood to foil the evil designs of enemies out to divide the Kashmiri society. He said agencies were hell bent on creating tension among Kashmiri Muslims. “As part of their (agencies’) well planned conspiracy, they want to break the social fabric of Kashmir as it suits their vested interests,” he said.

Asserting that millions of people were made hostage in their homes by clamping indefinite curfew in the city, he resented the wanton arrest of dozens of youth, ransacking of houses and beating of inmates by police during nocturnal raids. “It is shameful that instead of the youth who were not present in their houses, their parents were picked up and put behind bars,” he said, adding a physically challenged person, Sajjad Ahmad, had told him that police on the look out for his brother, Sarafraz Ahmad, had raided their house on Tuesday morning. 

During the raid, Ahmad said, the police beat the inmates, broke appliances and windowpanes and ransacked the house besides detaining his aged father, Sheikh Ghulam Qadir, who was dragged out. Another person Muhammad Husain was dragged out and detained..

Shameful, tragic: Malik

Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chairman, Muhammad Yasin Malik, said: “This is a big tragedy and shame for us that today CRPF personnel from U.P, Bihar and other Indian states guard our families and property, as we face danger not from any enemy but from our own Muslim brethren.”

“Instead of condemning the criminal act sacrilege of our religion, Muslims indulge in mutual conflict, one cannot but express regret over it,” he said, strongly condemning the shoe making company for its act.

“Is it honorable for us that today we fear our own Muslims while some CRPF men have to guard our houses and families?” Malik asked.

“Some agencies are desperate to divide the Muslims of Jammu Kashmir in the name of sects and that is why we keep in touch with every sect and try to guard the unity among Muslims. Everyone knows that there are some miscreants and trouble makers keen to divide Muslims. It is high time the right thinking people of our society wake up and put in their efforts to extinguish the dangerous fire,” he said, urging the religious groups and leaders to rise to the occasion and discharge their responsibility.

Beware of forces’ conspiracy: Shah

Democratic Freedom Party president, Shabbir Ahmad Shah, appealed to Shias and Sunis to maintain their bonds of brotherhood under all circumstances and not fall prey to the conspiracy of forces.

“We have been fighting together the freedom struggle for the past 65 years and we should keep that in mind while facing the forces hell bent upon disturbing the unity of our community,” he said.

“We should not let anyone take advantage of anything and should not let them create a divide between Shias and Sunis. We are one and should not allow any divide between ourselves,” he said, adding there were anti-Islam forces led by the US who wanted to disturb our unity.

Attempt to hurt Muslim sentiment: Mufti Bashiruddin

The Grand Mufti and chairman, J&K Muslim Personal Law Board, Mufti Bashiruddin, condemned the ‘provocative and condemnable’ act of the shoe company on the eve of Muharram. “These attempts are aimed at hurting the sentiments of Muslims across the world,” he said, appealing the people to maintain peace and harmony.

Mufti Bashiruddin urged the state government to ensure that a mechanism was put in place to prevent the import into the state of goods that carried any anti-Islam inscriptions and provocative material.

JAH concerned

Jami’at-e-Ahli Hadees expressed concern over the incidents saying attempts were being made to harm the mutual harmony and brotherhood among Muslims. Jami’at general- secretary, Abdul Rahman Bhat, said it was incumbent upon every Muslim to uphold the virtues of brotherhood. He termed the incidents of hurting sentiments and resulting skirmishes as unfortunate and avoidable. 

Nayeem Khan saddened

Jammu and Kashmir National Front chairman, Nayeem Ahmad Khan, expressed sadness over the incidents saying they were the result of anti-Mulsim forces’ designs to divide them. He said such forces were active is Kashmir only to engage people in such matters so that they forget the freedom struggle. He asked responsible citizens and religious leaders to come forward to defeat the anti-Muslim forces and ensure mutual peace and harmony.

Other organizations and leaders condemning the sacrilege and the fallout in city areas included: Muslim Khawateen Markaz chairperson, Anjum Zamrud Habib,  Islamic Political Party chief, Muhammad Yousuf Naqqash; and Peoples League leader, Mukhtar Ahmad Waza.
