SRINAGAR (ONS) – Protests over insults to holy names continued for the second day in several parts of Kashmir, with demonstrators burning tyres on roads and shouting slogans against the US and Israel.
Many areas in North Kashmir remained shut down today after a wave of anger over the outrage had blocked traffic on three key highways for the entire day yesterday, while in the city, groups of youth held up traffic in the Hawal and Saida Kadal quarters.
The police have already taken a Magam shopkeeper into custody whose store had sold a pair of shoes purportedly bearing a holy name.
The stock of footwear, said to have been manufactured by a US company, has been impounded.
In the north of the valley, tension continued in Pattan, Mir Gund, Magam, Narbal, Lawaypora, and several other areas with locals taking to the streets in anti-US and anti-Israel demonstrations.
Protests erupted in the Sumbal-Shadipora belt also, where residents demanded a police case to be registered against the US company.
The demonstrators attributed the insult to anti-Islam forces who, they said, were bent upon hurting the sentiments of Muslims.
The protests occurred intermittently throughout the day, but no violence or any other untoward incident was reported from the area.
Police and paramilitary men had been deployed at several points to deal with any eventuality.
