Srinagar: Commuters had to face immense hardships due to a massive traffic jam in Srinagar civil lines after protestors took to the streets, demanding compensation for a labourer, who was electrocuted to death early this month in the summer capital.
Shouting anti-PDD and slogans in the favour of their demands, the protestors blocked the road connecting MA road with Jahangir Chowk, leading to massive traffic jam which last for several hours.
The protestors were demanding compensation for the casual labourer, who was killed and another, who was critically injured, when they got in contact with a live wire in Srinagar city due to alleged negligence of PDD.
However, due to the protest, large number of vehicles, including those carrying officials, businessmen and others, got stranded on Jahangir chowk-Batamallo stretch for several hours.
Meanwhile, after being stuck in the traffic jam for over two hours, some of the passengers de-boarded the vehicles and made their way to MA road on foot.
But, the private vehicle owners were not that lucky as they remained stranded on the stretch for several hours. Vehicles could also be seen stranded on the Jahangir Chowk flyover. Meanwhile, because of traffic jam on Jahangir chowk-Batamallo stretch, the adjoining roads also experienced heavy rush of vehicles leading to chaos in major parts of civil lines.
It was only after civil and police officers intervened that traffic was resumed on the road.
