Srinagar: A 33-year-old man was beaten to death when he was snatched by a mob from police in Uri in north Kashmir district of Baramulla, official sources said here today.
They said one Mushtaq Ahmad Khan of Kutroo, Nadihal Rafiabad lodged a written complaint in Police Station Panzla, Rafiabad on March 15 that his wife, mother of two children was kidnapped by one Ashiq Khan son of Mohammad Sadiq Khan of Paranpela, Uri.
They said on Friday, a police party from Police Station Panzala accompanied by Police party from police Station Uri accomapnied by two locals went to village ParanPeela, Uri to recover the kidnapped woman. While the woman was being recovered from one of the houses a violent mob from the side of accused restored to intense violence and pelted stones upon police party and accompanying civilians from Rafiabad, they said.
Basheer Khan, son of Sher Ali Khan of Lari Aangan, Rafiabad who was accompanying the police party from Panzullah, Rafiabad to help them identify the kidnapped woman was however, despite police presence, taken hostage by the mob. He was reportedly attacked with lathis and thrown into a Nallah, resulting into his death.
According to Police on 15 March one Mushtaq Ahmad Khan of Kutroo, Nadihal Rafiabad lodged a written complaint in Police Station Panzla,Rafiabad that his wife (name withheld-a mother of two children ) was kidnapped by one Ashiq Khan son of Mohammad Sadiq Khan of Paranpela, Uri.
A police team went to search for the woman and took along two civilians from the complainant’s family to identify her.
However, a mob assisting the accused attacked the policemen and “held one of the two civilians as hostage”, said the police officer.
“The hostaged civilian was severely beaten and thrown into a stream from where his dead body was recovered,” he said.
