Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Police Monday foiled a sit-in protest by separatists in the capital, Srinagar, and detained several of its leaders and activists.
Scores of separatist leaders and activists, including from both the faction of Hurriyat Conference and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), took to streets at Maisuma against the detention and plight of hundreds of Kashmiris languishing in different jails in the state.
However, when the protestors were moving toward Lal Chowk, the nerve centre of the summer capital, security forces deployed in the area stopped them from moving ahead.
Later, several leaders and activists were taken into custody.
Both the factions of Hurriyat and JKLF, spearheading the agitation, demanding right to ‘self determination’, had called Day Long Sit-In by separatist leaders and activists today. However, there was no strike, the separatist had said in their last protest calendar.
But, chairmen of both the factions of Hurriyat Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, besides about half a dozen separatist leaders were put under house arrest while JKLF chief Mohammad Yasin Malik was arrested to foil sit-in.
Meanwhile, all roads and lanes leading Maisuma, headquarter of JKLF near here have been closed. Shops and business establishments in Maisuma, Gaw Kadal, Haji Masjid, Red Cross road and nearby areas remained closed due to deployment of security forces though there was no strike call.
