Awantipora: Clashes between protesters and government forces erupted Thursday near the encounter site in Padgampora, Awantipora village of south Kashmirs Pulwama district.
Earlier, a gunfight started in the village after forces laid a siege and started search operation in the area.
Reports said that soon after the anti-militant operation was started, scores of protesters mostly youth came on streets and started targeting government forces with stones and rocks.
They said that police and forces retaliated by firing tear smoke shells to disperse the protesters.
Clashes and anti-militant operation were going on in the area when reports last came in.
Meanwhile, reports said that the family of Lashkar-e-Toiba militant Shafi Shergujri of Banderpora has been brought near the encounter site to persuade him to surrender.
Shafi is reportedly trapped in a house which has been cordoned off by the forces.
