SRINAGAR: The intense security check-up by forces on Srinagar-Muzaffarabad highway has brought back days of 90s when people were put to harsh conditions due to armed conflict.
The commuters from North Kashmir districts of Bandipora, Baramulla, Kupwara and parts of Budgam on Friday said that they were being put to humiliation at Parimpora By-Pass crossing by men in uniform.
It has been a routine for cops who stop vehicles, both public and private, and make passengers stand in line and then go for search operations, said a passenger who was on way to Srinagar from Kupwara. I am a daily commuter and there seems to be no end to such humiliation.
A student from Tangmarg told Kashmir Observer (KO) that the forces, JKP cops, ask them unusual questions. Despite seeing our identity cards, the police men ask us wherefrom we come? It is ironic, he exclaimed.
KO received scores of complaints from commuters and drivers who said they were being put to humiliation for unknown reasons. I have been stopped three times in last five days and my vehicle was intensely searched, a driver said. It seems show of power than routine duty.
However, SDPO City West told the Kashmir Observer, it is routine police work.
We do not carry out such operations for anti-militancy, he said, such operations are done for incidents of robbery and other anti-social elements.
He asserted, it is not humiliation. Our work is to ensure safety of our people.
