SRINAGAR: The joint resistance leadership on Friday held protests against the mass rapes incident of Kunan village in Kupwara district.
Hurriyat Conference leaders and workers participated in a peaceful protest demonstration outside Jamia Masjid Srinagar against the failure of the government in providing justice to the victims of Kunan.
At least 23 women were raped by Indian army men during the intervening night of 23 and 24 February 1991.
Besides, the resistance leaders demanded immediate release of all political prisoners held in jails across Jammu Kashmir and outside. Despite the passage of 26 long years, the accused Indian forces had not been punished for the mass rape of the Kunan Poshpora women or even made to stand trial in the court of law, which was highly condemnable and a travesty of justice.
Meanwhile, JKLF chief, Mohammad Yasin Mali, in a statement said that Kunan mass rape incident is a haunting reality of Indian oppression in Jammu Kashmir.
Savagery exhibited by Indian army at Kunan and no criminal penalized yet exposing the ugly face of Indian democracy in Jammu Kashmir, he said.
Terming Kunan mass incident rape by Indian army and forces as glaring example of Indian oppression in Jammu and Kashmir, he added, Indians use attacks on the chastity of women as a war-tactic and Kunan was the beginning of this ugly Indian terrorism in Jammu Kashmir. More than two decades have passed but till date no one among those who committed crime at Kunan have been booked or penalized which also clarifies the farce of Indian democracy in Jammu Kashmir.
Ironically international community, especially the West is not much bothered about the rights of Kashmiri women and even carry out no lip services to condemn the oppression unleashed by Indian state against them in Jammu Kashmir, which is criminal and highly deplorable, Malik added.
The JKLF statement further said that its activists along with people from other walks of life today staged a peaceful protest near Budshah Chowk near Lal Chowk against Kunan mass rape incident.
A statement issued by Syed Ali Geelani led Tehreek-e-Hurriyat said that its activist, Umer Adil Dar, led a protest demonstration in Soiteng area of Srinagar.
