Nepalis Being Settled In Jammu, JMU Seeks Probe

JAMMU: Jammu Muslim Front (JMU), an amalgam of Jammu based Muslim organizations, on Friday alleged that non-state subjects are being settled across winter capital which has affected the local population particularly the traders community badly.

President Jammu Muslim Front, Qazi Imran, told a local news gathering agency – CNS – that thousands of people from Nepal are being settled near Bagh-e-Bahu Jammu.

“The settlement is known as Gorkha Nagar where thousands of Nepalis live. Government is silent on the issue. The fact is that hundreds of non-locals have managed to own ‘Benami Property’. A conspiracy is being hatched to settle non-locals in Jammu,” he said.

He said that even J&K government admitted in the Legislative Assembly this year that non-state subjects were allotted housing facility in Jammu under a scheme meant for providing shelter to slum dwellers and house-less people from J&K.

“We impress upon the Government to undertake a survey and identify the non-state subjects who have been allotted various dwelling units and take action against them. We have proofs and report that non-state subjects are being encouraged to settle in Jammu. This will badly affect the local population,” he said.

“Despite knowing the fact that non-state subjects have owned properties in Jammu and are settled across the region including Gandhi Nagar, Government is in slumber and doesn’t want to do anything in this regard,” he said.

General Secretary JMU, Shujah Zaffar, also accused J&K Government of negligence and lack of action has added to the woes of the locals. “Everywhere in Jammu, non-locals have erected settlements and this has been done in connivance with the authorities,” he said.
