Srinagar : The High Court Bar association on Wednesday staged a pro-freedom protest here and demanded right to self-determination for the people of Jammu and Kashmir promised by India in United Nations.
The protest was led by HCBA president, Mian Abdul Qayoom during which lawyers shouted slogans in favour of Islam and Azadi. The HCBA president also extended support to the resistance leaderships programme on the hanging anniversaries of Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat.
Addressing the lawyers, Mian Qayoom said that there are 28 resolutions on Kashmir in UN, according to which people of Kashmir were supposed to decide about their future. Pakistan has also agreed to hold plebiscite. However 70 years have passed but that chance to decide our future by us has not been given despite India promising the same in and outside its Parliament, he said.
The HCBA president said: For demanding our right to self-determination, we are being imprisoned, slapped with PSA, shifted from one jail to another and our freedom is being curtailed, he said, adding that the HCBA wants Kashmir issue to be resolved according to wishes and aspirations of Kashmiri people.
Mian Qayoom said that the HCBA stands with resistance leadership and supports their every protest programme. We completely support programme of leadership given by them for Feb 9 and Feb 11. I appeal lawyers to suspend their work on these two days in order to display solidarity and support, the Bar president added.
