Srinagar: Expressing solidarity with 27-yr-old Muzzafar Ahmed Rather and his family who has been awarded death sentence by a Kolkata court, Hurriyat Conference (M) chairperson, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, on Friday said that the institute of judiciary in India is time and again used by the Indian state to punish the people of J&K for their political views and aspirations.
Announcing death sentence to Muzzafar on flimsy grounds of sedition when there is no substantial evidence against him is a mockery of justice, the incarcerated Hurriyat Conference (M) chief said. Same was done in the case of Muhammad Maqbool Bhat and Mohammad Afzal Guru in the name of satisfying the collective conscience of the nation.
Mirwaiz, who was supposed to lead a rally at Jamia Masjid against the death sentence as a part of the programme of the joint resistance leadership, was put under house arrest just minutes before he could leave for Jamia Masjid for Friday prayers.
Such judgments are in keeping with the states policy to eliminate Kashmiris and to instil fear in them and terrorize them, he said in a statement. Each day this policy plays itself out in one way or the other Incidents such as in Samboora, Pampore where forces fired indiscriminately resulting in five young boys getting bullets in their legs and thighs and who are undergoing treatment at various hospitals.
Mirwaiz added that residents of a house including women and children were fired upon at will by the forces, however, they were lucky enough to escape unhurt. The situation in Kashmir is such that people are at the mercy of occupational forces who represent the state authorities and have no accountability for their actions and people are not even safe within the four walls of their homes.
He said that while this is the condition of people, dramas for the chair are enacted amongst the squabbling collaborators whose role has been reduced to agents of occupation, to consolidate and further the interests of the occupier and compound our suffering.
