Srinagar: Clashes between the government forces and protesters erupted in the northern apple town of Sopore on Friday.
Local sources said that soon after the congregational prayers when people came out of the Jamia masjid they started protesting by raising anti-India and pro-freedom slogans.
However, police personnel deployed in large numbers swung into action and tried to stop their march.
They said that protesters pelted stones on forces ensuing clashes.
Joint resistance leaders, Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik had called for protests after prayers against attacks on Kathua Muslims.
