Srinagar : Cold wave tightened its grip in Kashmir Valley as the summer capital of the state, Srinagar shivered at minus five degrees Celsius, officials in the Metrological (MeT) department said.
All water bodies, including world famous Dal Lake, were frozen in Ladakh region and Kashmir valley as cold wave has further intensified after the minimum temperature recorded considerable drop though the day temperature remained near normal.
Leh was coldest in the region after the minimum temperature dipped and settled at minus 17.7 degree followed by border town of Kargil with minus 15.6 degree, coldest of the winter so far.
A Met department spokesperson here today said that light rain and snow will occur at isolated places during the next 24 hours and scattered to widespread in the subsequent 48 hours in the valley.
The night temperature in Leh in Ladakh region witnessed further dip and settled at minus 17.7 degree, against minus 16 degree recorded yesterday while the mercury plunged and settled at minus 15.6 degree, against 14 degree recorded yesterday in Kargil.
He said sky will be mainly clear tomorrow in Leh, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 3 degree and minus 14 degree respectively.
People woke up to a chilly morning though sun came out for a brief period of time in the summer capital, Srinagar, where night temperature plunged at settled at minus 5 degree, against minus 4.1 degree recorded yesterday. People could be seen burning wood to unfreeze the taps frozen during the night due to about four notches below normal temperature in Srinagar.
The spokesperson said sky will be partly cloudy tomorrow in Srinagar, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 5 degree and minus 4 degree respectively.
Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, continued to remain the coldest place in Kashmir valley. The ski resort recorded the coldest night of the season after mercury dipped and settled at minus 13.5 degree, against minus 13 degree recorded yesterday. The night temperature was about 6 degree below normal.
World famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, also recorded the coldest night of the season after temperature further dipped and settled at about six degrees below normal. Against minus 12.4 degree recorded yesterday, the night temperature was minus 13 degree.
Meanwhile, Qazigund, the gateway to Kashmir valley, also recorded the coldest night of the season after mercury plunged and settled at minus 7.2 degree, which is about 4 degree below normal. The night temperature recorded yesterday at Qazigund was minus 4.2 degree.
However, Kupwara in north Kashmir witnessed some improvement in the night temperature though it was still three degree below normal. Against minus 6.2 degree recorded yesterday, the night temperature was minus 5.8 degree.
Another health resort, Kokernag also witnessed the coldest night of the season after the temperature dipped and settled at minus 7.1 degree, against minus 5.9 degree recorded yesterday. The night temperature recorded in Kokernag was about three degree below normal.
