Kupwara: Heaps of garbage; polythene bags, medical waste, human waste and people washing vehicles could seem in rivers north Kashmirs Kupwara district.
On early morning a municipal dumper comes and unloads the garbage in Nallah Lolab nearby Zangli area of Kupwara town. Locals alleged that despite the repeated requests to the concerned authorities not to pollute the water bodies, and place the garbage away from the rivers, but they never pay heed.
Our heads hang in shame, said Shahid Ahmed Peer, while looking at a heap of garbage in river. Despite having municipal workers, and huge sum of money for dispose wastage, they are not giving attention to sanitation of Kupwara town.
He said this is a gross violation of environmental laws and pollution control board and district administration is sleeping. It is pertinent to mention here that these rivers in Kupwara are major source water for drinking water but people felt scare to use more now, because of its polluted nature and got contaminated.
Gulam Nabi shah, 37-year, told KNS, Rivers are only source for drinking water, upon these rivers we depend and use water. But government is deliberately turning them poison.
He adds that people fear to use water even for agriculture, because according to agro-experts it carries some toxic elements which are dangerous for plants too and reduce the production.
While doctors are astonished that stomach infections are mostly because of contaminated water.
Throwing medical waste into rivers and other water bodies has created health havoc. People who are depending on such water bodies suffer stomach infection like; ulcers, pains, vomiting or sometimes it causes cancers. Said Dr Shabeer Ahmad Dr Shabeer said, We receive patients from adjacent villages of Kupwara having stomach pains and sometimes having more severe problem. He said the main cause of this is use of contaminated water.
When contacted Deputy Commissioner Kupwara Gh Mohammad Dar, he said that as I have recently taken the charge and I will look into the mater seriously.
