Srinagar: Businesses remained shut for the second day on the last day of 2016 in the Kashmir valley, where normal life was affected due to strike called by Resistance Leadership.
Meanwhile, both the factions of the Hurriyat Conference and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), spearheading the movement for the past six months, have extended the two days a week strike (Fridays and Saturdays) till January 15.
Shops and business establishments remained closed in the main business hubs of summer capital, Srinagar. However, majority private transport besides passenger vehicles were seen plying on city routes. Work in government offices and banks was also near normal.
Security forces and state police personnel, remained deployed on city routes, particularly in the down town and Shehar-e-Khas and sensitive uptown localities like Maisuma, Batmalu and Hyderpora. Reports of shut down were also received from this and other north Kashmir towns, a report from Baramulla said. Shops remained closed though vehicles were plying on most roads, including on Srinagar-Uri highway. Work was near normal in government offices and banks, report added.
Business and other activities remained affected in Anantnag and other south Kashmir towns and tehsil headquarters, a report from Shopian said. Some vehicles were seen plying, the report said.
Similar reports were also received from central Kashmir districts of Badgam and Ganderbal.
