Srinagar: State Human Rights Commission has taken suo-moto cognizance of a news report regarding the house arrests of citizens and has directed the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir to apprize the Commission about the authority of law under which such detentions are made.
The Chairman SHRC Justice Bilal Ahmed Nazki in this regard has dispatched a notice to the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir and has sought his reply in the matter.
A number of separatist leaders have been under house arrest. Some of the leaders are Syed Ali Geelani, Syeda Aasiya Andrabi, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Shabir Ahmed Shah and Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai.
Meanwhile, Chairman SHRC visited the District Jail Anantnag. While inspection of the said jail he took stock of living conditions and other facilities provided by the jail authorities to the prisoners. The recommendations according to the Commission will be submitted before the government. CNS
