Platform For Scientists To Disseminate Their Research On Faunal Diversity: Malik
SRINAGAR – A three day national seminar on science for shaping the future of India: faunal diversity challenges and opportunities organised by the P G department of Zoology University of Kashmir in collaboration with Indian science congress Association, began at Ghandi Bhawan Hall of the university of Kashmir today.
Inaugurating the event the Chief Guest on the occasion Abdul Ghani Malik ,Minister for higher Education ,Labour and Employment said that human population explosion and the decline in wild life fauna and flora is a global problem and rapid technological development made by man has resulted in irreparable loss to wild life and India is no exception to this fact. Malik said that many animals are in the endangered list . He said that several steps have been taken for the conservation of wild life plants and animals which includes framing and implementation of laws , increase in the protected area network , creation of national parks , sanctuaries bio sphere reserves, captive breeding etc but in spite of all these steps wild life continues to suffer . Malik said that under such conditions scientific research on environment ecology and management assumes significance for the formulation of strategies and comprehensive management for conservation of plants and wild life and faunal diversity.
Hoping that the seminar will provide a platform for the scientists from all over the country to disseminate their research findings on the theme , Malik said that recommendations from the seminar will hopefully prove beneficial in the long run for devising management and conservation strategies .
Speaking on the occasion Dean Acadamic affairs Prof A M Shah termed the seminar theme as relevant and innovative and while giving an overview of the changing economic scenario of the country from 1991 onwards he said that it is through innovative research only that our students and scholars can be part of the development process . Referring to the role of university of Kashmir in the development process Prof Shah said that at KU we are trying to move towards high end research through various collaborations .
Registrar University of Kashmir Prof Zafar Ahmad Reshi called for the establishment of a bio -diversity Board in the state of J&K state which he said will go a long way in safeguarding the bio- diversity of the state . Prof Rishi also spelled out the urgent need for creating a work force for the documentation of bio diversity in india . Prof Rishi emphasised on what he termed as creating a culture of research and said that this will finally lead to safeguarding our bio diversity in a big way.
Ealier Prof G Mustafa Shah seminar president and dean faculty of biological sciences said that loss of bio diversity is a great concern for of the state .Prof Mustafa said that need of the hour is to continue with the research to address all challenges confronting our bio diversity. Prof Mustafa while talking about the aim of holding the seminar said that it is to disseminate knowledge about the latest research in the field of bio diversity . Seminar president informed that the papers to be presented during the three days are expected to put in innovative research techniques and ideas to deal with the emerging challenges . Dr Mustafa informed the audience that about 150 scientists and researchers from all over the country are participating in the seminar and sharing their research experience and knowledge .
General secretary Indian science congress Association Dr (s) Vijay laxmi saxena said that her organisation is there to advance and promote the cause of science in India. She said that present collaboration is bound to benefit all of us in finding ways and means to safeguard our rich bio diversity.
Prof M Nayyar Azim head department of zoology presented vote of thanks and expressed his gratitude to all who helped to hold the sminar.
Dr B M Arora ,president association of Indian zoo and wildlife veterinaries, Prof M K jyoti,convenor Indian science congress association ,Prof DC Goutum HP University, Shimla , Prof K K Sharma Jammu university were present besides deans of faculties , heads of departments students and scholars and members of civil society.
