A few weeks ago JKBOSE issued date sheets for class 10th and class 12th annual exams. The date sheets came as a rude shock to the students as well as to their parents who were already worried about the future of their children. Being the minister of this state, you must already be aware about the present situation in our valley. It is an irony that despite being fully aware about what has been happening in our valley since last 3 months, an individual of your intellect and wit still approved the proposal of conducting the board exams in November. I will not go into the political aspect of the situation but would rather try to appeal to your sense of logic and reason. The decision to conduct the exams so quickly despite the fact that all the students of the valley have lost most of their academic year to shutdowns and curfews is most certainly a political move.
How does your government expect the students to sit in examination when they have been caged in their homes for more than 90 days with no access to schools, tuitions centres, libraries, notes and internet? Another thing I fail to understand is that with what logic the students are being asked to appear in exams for the entire prescribed syllabus when they haven’t even completed 40% of their syllabus?
No matter how your government might defend this decision, you cannot justify it. The present mental state of the people in this valley especially the younger generation is very fragile and with the added stress of exams, the students are extremely prone to depression. If the welfare of the students is really the prime concern of your government, then you only have two options – to either give a relaxation in the exam syllabus or to postpone the exams. I can understand why reducing the syllabus may not seem feasible to you as well as a few others. You may worry that if the syllabus is reduced, the students may not be able to crack any competitive exams. Need I remind you that the same was proven wrong by the students of the 2010 batch? Had reducing the prescribed syllabus affected their performance in any way, none of them would have made it to various medical colleges and engineering colleges of our country.
I, on behalf of all the stressed students and their extremely worried parents request you to take a suitable decision, one that is actually for the welfare of the students, soon. The increasing uncertainty over this decision is only causing stress to the students and taking away valuable preparation time from them. I just hope the students don’t have to pay a heavy price for your government’s stubbornness.
