Srinagar: Police and CRPF men lobbed tear gas shells on a Muharram procession in old Srinagar Friday evening resulting in clashes.
Reports said that thousands of members of Shia community took out a procession on 5th Muharram from Saida Kadal Friday evening. As the procession began march towards Hassanabad Imambargah, it was intercepted by a large contingent of police and paramilitary CRPF.
When mourners pressed ahead Govt forces resorted to cane charge and heavy tear gas shelling.
Infuriated mourners in return raised intense slogans, like "Labayk Ya Hussain" and "We Want Freedom", said Syed Shahriyar a journalist covering the event.
Clashes soon spread along the entire Saida Kadal-Rainawari stretch. Dozens of mourners, including several women were repoortedly injured in the police action, eyewitnesses said.
Earlier CRPF was deployed in huge numbers to disallow the procession but thousands of people came out and formed the procession.
On Thursday, police and CRPF men had imposed severe restrictions in the area, however, youths had tried to take out small processions but they were chased away.
