Srinagar: The State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (SCDRC) that had been left headless almost a year ago with the appointment of Justice (Retd) Bashir Ahmad Kirmani as member of the Accountability Commission is giving tough time to consumers.
A delegation of consumers told CNS in Srinagar that after Justice Kirmani’s appointment, the SCDRC is non-functional.
“The headless SCDRC has been adding to our woes. The headless commission unlike other government departments has stopped functioning and its office remains closed,” said a group of aggrieved consumers.
“Consumer courts are to save consumers from exploitation. But the government is denying that right.”
Any person can go the consumer courts to seek compensation, refund or replacement of defected products.
People can register complaint against any agency or trader, where monetary transaction is involved.
“It is obvious that by leaving SCDRC headless, the state government is defeating the very purpose of the Consumer Protection Act. This assumes graver proportions as a large number of people affected by the last year’s devastating floods have cases pending before the State Consumer Commission,” they added.
The consumers have appealed to the government to fill the vacancy without any further delay so that their grievances are redressed at an earliest. CNS
