Bandipora: One militant was killed on Thursday in a gunfight with the Govt. forces in Aragam Chitti Bandi village of Bandipora district.
According to police sources, a group of gunmen fired upon a security patrolling party near Chapran Argam area of Bandipora on Wednesday night. Shortly after the incident, the patrolling party sought assistance while the troopers cordoned off the area.
The operation was halted for the night while at dawn troopers from 13 Rashtriya Rifles fired some shells on the house of one owned by a local Sher Jan. During search and combing operation the body of a ‘militant’ was recovered from the damaged house.
Sources said that militants were five in number while four managed to escape from the scene. As the news about the killing of a militant spread in the area, large number of people including women assembled outside Army camp demanding the body of the slain youth be handed over to them for last rites.
"If the person killed is of foreign origin, then why are security forces not showing us the body. We think the person is a Kashmiri and was killed in a fake encounter," the protestors alleged.
As the demonstrators were heading towards main Bandipora, security forces swung into action and resorted to lathi charge which had no impact.
Later, security forces burst teargas shells and fired pellets to disperse the demonstrators, who were pelting stones and raising anti-security force slogans.
Several persons, including a minor, were injured in the clashes which were still going on when the reports last came in as demonstrators refused to disperse, demanding body of the militant.
Meanwhile, the injured minor was rushed to local hospital from where he was referred to Srinagar in a critical condition.
A police official said that the slain militant was not a local and after post mortem his body was shifted to Uri where it was laid to rest with proper religious rites
