SRINAGAR: Eleven persons including an army soldier were killed in two separate encounters in Uri and Nowgam sectors of North Kashmir on Tuesday.
“Two infiltration bids by militants from across the Line of Control(LoC) have been foiled in Uri and Nowgam sectors today. At both places the operations are in progress,” an army spokesman said in Srinagar.
The spokesman refused to comment on the number of militants killed in the ongoing operations so far, saying details will be made public in due course.
He, however, said one soldier was killed in the operation in Nowgam sector.
Army sources in Delhi, however, said that 10 infiltrators were killed in the encounter with the army in the Uri sector. The bodies have not yet been recovered, they added.
The sources said a group of 15 militants had attempted to infiltrate into Indian territory through the LoC.
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh again reviewed the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir at a meeting in Delhi with top officials, including NSA Ajit Doval and Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar.
The infiltration bids and the ceasefire violation came two days after authorities said four militants of Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad stormed an army base in Uri Sector, killing 18 soldiers and injuring several others. All the four militants were also killed.
The attack has heightened tensions between India and Pakistan.
Militants target police station
Militants attacked a police station with automatic weapons in the frontier district of Kupwara, official sources said here today.
They said militants resorted to indiscriminate firing towards Handwara police station last night. Security guards also retaliated and the exchange of fire continued for some time.
The militants later managed to escape under the cover of darkness, they said adding no one was injured.
A massive hunt has been launched early this morning to nab the militants, they said.
As India Mulls Options, Pakistan Opens Fire Along LOC
SRINAGAR: As India mulls options to give a befitting reply for the Uri attack that New Delhi says was perpetrated by the neighbouring country, Pakistani troops reportedly opened fire on Tuesday from the other side of the LoC in the same sector. However, there was no damage in the incident, Indian army said.
“There has been a ceasefire violation in Uri sector – small arms,” a Defence spokesman said in Srinagar. “It has not been intense or continuous firing from across. We are trying to ascertain details”.
He said the firing from across the Line of Control took place between 1.10 pm and 1.30 pm. The official said while there were no reports of any casualty in the firing, further details of the incident were awaited.
