SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society (JKCCS) on late Tuesday evening said that court has ordered release of noted human rights activists Khurram Parvez.
However, the rights defender group said that police continue to detain the rights defender.
“Late this evening, Principal District and Sessions Judge, Srinagar, set aside the detention order of the Executive Magistrate on Khurram Parvez based on multiple police illegalities. No service of show cause notice. The allegations were not read out or provided to him. No enquiry into the veracity of the allegations. In addition, as submitted by lawyers from the Bar Association and JKCCS, Khurram Parvez was not even brought before the magistrate. At no point was he offered any legal assistance,” a statement issued by CCS said this evening.
“Family and JKCCS legal team rushed to Kupwara sub-jail and served the order on the concerned officials,” the statement informed. “Meanwhile, police personnel arrived, (and) refused to allow his release.”
The CCS said that the police have taken Khurram Parvez to the Kupwara police station and continue to detain him “in absolute disregard for the court order”.
“The police must immediately release Khurram Parvez as, once again, he appears to be in imminent danger as he continues in police custody,” the Srinagar based rights defender group demanded.
