SRINAGAR: Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti had to face angry crowds as she arrived at Kond village of Qazigund area in Kulgam district on Saturday morning to meet the family of a youth killed during the recent clashes, The Tribune reported on Saturday.
Angry villagers pelted the Chief Minister’s cavalcade with stones. The Chief Minister cut short her visit and left the village. Clashes between the protesters and police followed in the area, reports said.
A police official termed the reports baseless that stone-pelting incident occurred in the village at the time of Mehbooba’s presence in the village. He said that stone-pelting incidents occurred in other villages and not at Kreelukund. Extra security measures had been put in place in wake of Chief Minister’s visit.
“A helicopter landed at a place near 9 Rashtriya Rifles Army camp and she visited the house of Muhammad Ramzan Sheikh. She was accompanied by some party leaders,” said a local.
In a Facebook post the chief minister said: “Visited the family of late Mashooq Ahmed, firing victim of Kund, Kulgam and offered heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.”
In her comment on the ongoing violence in which 73 people have been killed, Mufti said: “The loss of human lives is a colossal tragedy and everyone should strive for peace in J&K.”
Meanwhile, the house of Gulzar Sheikh was burnt down by the angry people from the adjacent localities of Warpora Kund in south Kashmir.
Sheikh had reportedly facilitated Mehbooba Mufti’s visit to south Kashmir to meet the victim in Warpora Kund on Saturday morning.
Gulzar is PDP block president.
