Srinagar: The main opposition National Conference (NC) leaders and legislators today held a protest sit-in outside Civil Secretariat here in Srinagar against the continued and unabated use of lethal force against civilians in Kashmir.
Demanding the mass harassment of civilians and the destruction of their properties should be stopped with an immediate effect, the party top leaders said New Delhi should hold broad-based and meaningful talks with all stakeholders including the separatist leadership as well as those who had joined the path of militancy.
“New Delhi should talk to Hurriyat leaders and other separatist leaders and also engage in talks with militants as this has been done in the past as well. There is no alternative to a credible dialogue and no further time should be wasted as the Valley is on the brink of complete chaos”, NC General Secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar said.
Holding placards demanding a ban on pellet guns and highlighting the brazen harassment of civilians in the State, Sagar said the situation in the Valley had been aggravated at every step along the way by irresponsible and insensitive statements of the Chief Minister who has remained ineffective and clueless throughout this period.
The NC leaders said the recent killing of a youth in Nadihal, Rafiabad proved that unprovoked and lethal force was still being used unabated across the Valley despite repeated attempts by the Government to portray the situation as normal.
They said the party stands in complete solidarity with the people and continues to seek a just and fair resolution of the political issue.
The NC leaders said NC working president Omar Abdullah had led an opposition parties’ delegation to New Delhi to awaken national leaders to the plight of the people in Kashmir and draw their attention towards their grief and pain.
“Till this collective effort by the opposition, the NC leaders said, the PDP-BJP State Government was watching sadistically as nearly 70 people lost their lives in the current unrest,” they said. The Police later detained the party leaders and legislators.
Other NC leaders who participated in the protest are Chowdhary Mohammad Ramzan, Mubarak Gul, Mohammad Akbar Lone, Mian Altaf, Nasir Aslam Wani, Sharif-ud-din Shariq, Mir Saifullah, Imran Nabi Dar and others. (PTK)
