SRINAGAR: Urging people to facilitate smooth movement of vehicles transformers for replacement, the Power Development Department (PDD) today said that 102 transformers have been damaged during the prevailing law and order situation in various parts of Kashmir.
“The Department is unable to replace the damaged transformers at various places fearing attacks as several vehicles carrying transformers for replacement in the affected areas were attacked by the mobs,” a PDD spokesperson said.
Giving area-wise details of the damaged transformers, the spokesman said that 16 transformers were damaged in district Anantnag, 15 each in Kulgam and Baramulla, 13 in Kupwara, 12 in Shopian, 10 in Pulwama, 8 in Bandipora, 6 in Budgam, 5 in Ganderbal and 2 in Srinagar.
He said the functioning of Transformer Repairing Workshops has also been severely affected because of the prevailing situation and out of 7 workshops located at Srinagar, Bijbehara, Sopore, Anantnag, Budgam, Ganderbal and Kupwara, only two workshops – Anantnag and Budgam are functioning partially.
The PDD spokesman said that works worth hundreds of crores of rupees which were under execution for improvement and upgradation of power infrastructure in Kashmir under Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme (APDRP), Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY) and other programmes including district and state sector have come to a halt and the delay would result in massive cost escalation.
