Srinagar: At 6 PM Thursday Srinagar came to life again in response to Hurriyat call for resuming business activities from 6 PM onwards. Traders responding to the call of united resistance leadership opened shops and there was heavy rush of people in the markets doing quick shopping.
The traders were seen waiting in Lal Chowk and Residency Road outside their shops till 6 PM. As clock struck point 6, they pulled up shop shutters.
The rush of private vehicles increased on the roads. Children and elders were seen enjoying their time in Partap Park in Lal Chowk.
However reports from Sopore said that shops continued to remain closed despite relaxation in shutdown as the police and paramilitary forces stopped them opening shops on Hurriyat call.
Forces “enforced” shutdown in the town on Tuesday when there was relaxation in shutdown from 6 PM.
“Forces personnel are manning main markets and have not allowed anyone to open shops,” reports said.
Reports from Lal Chowk said that shopkeepers thrashed a boy – an alleged government agent – at Regal Lane,
As soon as the shops opened the boy hurled stones at the shops when they were doing normal business and attending the customers.
“We caught him and thrashed him. We even frisked his pockets for identity cards so that we could come to know who he was. However, he had only one hundred rupee in his pocket. He did not divulge anything. But we are sure he is a police agent as they don’t want us to follow Hurriyat programme,” reports quoted shopkeepers as having said.
The shopkeepers later set him free after advising him “not to sabotage the Hurriyat protest calendar and relaxation period”.
