Historically and factually, the Kashmir dispute has been unresolved since 1947, as is evident from the innumerable mammoth processions and protests held by Kashmiris till date. The failure to settle this long pending political issue is to be fundamentally attributed to the procrastination deliberately employed by India and its political agencies in Kashmir, who have repeatedly put off its settlement due to a concealed fear of an unfavourable referendum result. Pathetically, the long delayed resolution of this simple political dispute of sub-continental partition has worsened to a very complicated imbroglio, ever vitiating and threatening the peace and stability of the region. It has made the Kashmiri populace live and suffer in war-like situations and prisonlike circumstances more often than not. They have become prisoners within their own home. It has also tarnished India’s image of being the biggest democracy in the world to a large extent.
Kashmir is the highest militarized zone of the world where one-third of India’s total military might is deployed at every nook and cranny of the valley which has a minuscule population of six million, in comparison to the total Indian population of 1250 million. Kashmiris are virtually living amongst thousands of “silent volcanoes”- ammunition depots, army and paramilitary cantonments, garrisons etc. The silent volcanoes erupt at any time, killing innocent people in their own land. The thousands of cemeteries of Kashmiri martyrs located in the length and breadth of this garrisoned paradise exist to tell you the countless stories of injustice, oppression and brutality. But why doesn’t anyone in the civilised world as well as “democratic” India pay any heed to the Kashmiris’ cries, notice the sacrifices of thousands of slain Kashmiris buried in the graveyards and feel pained at the thought of thousands languishing in prisons and interrogation centres? The basic reason is the political agencies created by Indian leaders in Kashmir over 70 years, which give off an air of freedom and security in Kashmir.
The genesis of the problem lies in the double game that these political agents have been playing right from start. Their lust for power has blinded them and robbed them of the power to understand the sentiments of Kashmiris. It has sterilized them of their moral courage to speak up and condemn the unending atrocities inflicted on the local population. In their own words, they only get votes for “water, electricity and roads” and nothing more. That being the case, they should then make it clear to everyone in black and white.
But what is the actual reality on the ground? The agents always represent their masters in their dealings with others. They have to secure and guard the interests of their “employers” only. Right from 1947, the masters, through these “employees”, have employed a myriad tactics to kill the deep-rooted sentiment of Kashmiris for freedom. But the undeniable reality stands out against all those “Machiavellian methods” used against Kashmiris – the apprehensions and miscalculations of Kashmir’s “tallest leader” about pre-1947 and post-1971 developments of the sub-continent, his son’s repetition of his legacy in 1996 and many “sell-outs” of the nation by them and other collaborators in Kashmir till date have failed to tame the sentiment of freedom among Kashmiris.
This is because their colossal sacrifices over decades have sustained it and outlived all Chanakyan tactics employed to kill it. After all, in the very words of neo-Chanakya (Anupam Kher) “brutal massacres of innocent people have no expiry date”. But sadly, the political agencies in Kashmir have not only actively contributed to the destructive procrastination of the issue, their condemnable mendacious propaganda about everything in Kashmir being hunky-dory while guns and pellet guns brutally massacre the people in their own homes has been akin to sprinkling salt on gaping wounds of the locals. Kashmiris have been taught through time that there is a visible distinction between benefactors and collaborators. The benefactors plead for and side with the victims, the common people, while the collaborators side with the tyrants, defend and cover their brazen acts of savagery.
