In a first, around two thousand protesters including women, children and elderly from tourist resort Pahalgam started marching towards main market on Wednesday afternoon.
“It was a peaceful march against recent killing in the valley,” said a local hotelier who wished not to be named.
“As soon as we reached near Higher Secondary School (Pahalgam), a police party appeared on the scene and without any provocation, began lobbying tear-smoke shells,” he said.
It created chaos in the otherwise calm tourist hotspot.
“There is tear-gas smoke everywhere,” said the hotelier. “They (police) then broke window panes of at least two dozen hotels.”
